About Gene Black
Gene Black is a native of Alabama. He creates in paint, fabric and fibers along with any other medium that speaks to him. Gene successfully survived the decades of the sixties and seventies. Those days of bright colors and fun music helped to shape his artistic style. Gene has been a creative soul since childhood when a neighbor, seeing his curiosity, taught him to crochet.
Gene started painting in acrylics and watercolors in the early part of 2000. After taking a workshop on abstract and nonrepresentational art, Gene became enamored with shape and design. Gene has been shown in several galleries and has won awards for his artwork.
While working in Public Health, a co-worker invited Gene to attend a class she was teaching on quilting. This began Gene’s journey into fiber arts. Gene has made many functional quilts; but became interested in art quilting as an outlet for his artistic visions. Gene’s small quilting studio was featured in the Fall 2010 edition of Cloth-Paper-Scissors magazine.
Later Gene discovered the ancient art of weaving. He began to create his own fabric as well as weaving many scarves. Less than a year after he started weaving, Gene attended the International Saori Weaving Conference where he learned many techniques from both Japanese and American instructors. Gene weaves on a simple two-shaft Saori loom to create fabrics that are colorful and artistic. He then sews these fabrics into garments that are wearable art pieces. Gene finds weaving to be a great time to meditate while creating. He finds the rhythm of the shuttle passing through the loom to be calming and peaceful.
Gene also learned to spin yarn early in his weaving journey. Some of his works contain his hand-spun yarns which add yet another hand made element to his work.
Gene lives and creates in his home in Anniston, Alabama.
